Nightly Ceremony
Daily Cliff Dive Ceremony that takes place at Black Rock Beach (Pu'u Keka'a). According to Hawaiian legends, the last chief of Maui, Kahekili, proved his spiritual strength by jumping from sacred Puu Kekaa (now commonly called Black Rock) and into the ocean below.
Today, they honor this tradition using a professional cliff diver. Begins at sunset. A conch shell and torch lighting signal the start of the nightly ritual of Lele Kawa, or cliff diving. One by one the torches are lit as the diver makes his way to Black Rock. Once he reaches the summit he offers his torch and a flower lei to the ocean and takes the plunge.
